In July, we hosted the first in-person installment of our Eat Well, Live Well cooking class series sponsored by Off Broadway Taproom. Chef Gabby Hammersley created and demonstrated three delicious recipes, and our participants went home with happy tummies and a host of new skills. This series is designed to help home cooks incorporate healthy recipes into mealtime without sacrificing flavor or blowing the budget. This first installment featured deceptively easy veggie sides like caprese Swiss chard wraps, summertime succotash, and beet ratatouille with herbed risotto. Gabby sent us home with a stack of recipes, chef’s tips, and skills to win big with vegetables in the kitchen.

This class was FREE for participants thanks to generous support from a host of partners. We are grateful to Off Broadway Taproom for sponsoring the event and lending not one, but THREE of their cooks; to First Christian Church for providing their lovely kitchen and dining room; and to local farmers Sue Keyes and Nancy Romans for supplying all of our vegetables at no cost. Our other partners included Galena Garlic, RVR Clearinghouse, King’s Daughters’ Health, First Baptist Church, and Parkhurst Dining at Hanover College. FInally, we’re grateful for the tireless work of our Program Coordinator Intern, Hanover College student Nicole Fry.

Thanks to our partners and the donations we received from many of our class participants, we’ll be able to offer more free classes in this series throughout the coming year. Stay tuned for your next chance to participate!

This was our first in-person class, but we were also delighted to host free classes on Zoom last fall in partnership with Ivy Tech nursing students and staff. These virtual classes featured nutrition and cooking tips for diabetes and heart disease, and we are looking forward to hosting more of these classes for specific health conditions in the years to come. We’re just getting started!
